Why am I rubbishing about dogs? This is why.. Yesterday, I went for a walk. It is needless to say, I went for this localised ‘daily quota of ‘keep me fit’ ordeal right in the middle of the Pandemic closedown. This little window of freedom from ‘stay home’ is conditional, we have to maintain physical separation of two metres. Needless to say, I observed the limitation happily. As I initiated the walk, a dog, perhaps a bulldog, started to bark; ear piercing ‘top notch’ bark. To an ignorant canine person the animal looked like a monkey. I thought, the dog is letting me know that during this ‘stay home’ closedown, I am supposed to be stuck inside my compound; thus the bark and ‘say,’ get inside man- this is not the time! I ignored its irritating nuisance and dipped into my contemplation, regarding the time of misfortune and about other grand design of the universal ‘lord’ or angels. My musing was interrupted once again, this time by my same species, the human; an approaching person in the opposite direction. Remarkable thing is in this ‘odd’ times, instead of saying hello to the stranger jogger, I veered to my right , perpendicularly almost making an irregular jigsaw curve. I instantly realised our ‘linear’ life is disrupted by this pandemic. Now, instead of proximity, we have to be careful to maintain distance between us. One thing good, generally speaking we are more than ready to fight this battle together.
This pandemic has brought the word like, ‘exponential’ down to earth, all are musing about the exponential growth. Other day, my son asked me to explain this model in layman’s language. Closest I could go is by telling him about our normal stairs (steps) where you go one step up which could be ten centimetres, then following step up will be once again ten centimetres. Thus, each time you take a step up, you climb ten centimeters. This is linear. Imagine steps which have uneven step up, for example, first one 10 cm climb, next one is 10 times 10 which is 100 cm. What happens next? 10 times, 10 times 10 , will be the next step which make it grand flight of 1000 cm or 10 metres. Climbing will be desperately difficult and ultimately unattainable. In case of Corona virus, we got to think about the number of virus, virus count; it multiplies like ‘hell’. This virus cell most likely came from the bat to an unknown creature in animal world, may be snake; then it was transferred to human body. Today, I have attached a small video clip; I compiled it from the New York Times. I also used information from the Economist and other research papers.
